Replace plastic materials for jars with carton board

The project aims to explore the possibility of replacing plastic jars with fiber-based alternatives in a very large global market. Today, most jars are made from fossil-based plastics such as PP and PET, despite a growing demand for more sustainable solutions.

Fiber-based materials from Swedish forestry resources offer strong potential, but the combination of strict performance requirements and high cost pressure has so far limited their development. By applying a novel technology for 3D forming of high-density cellulose, the project will test whether jars can be produced from commercially available paperboard. The focus is on rapidly verifying technical feasibility, customer acceptance, and market potential. The work includes design, tooling development, prototype manufacturing, testing, as well as market and consumer studies.

The project will be carried out over six months in collaboration between Blue Ocean Closures, responsible for technology and production, and Great Earth, contributing market insight and user testing. The objective is to move from an early-stage idea to a validated solution. If successful, the project could replace large volumes of plastic, reducing climate impact while increasing the value of Swedish forest-based resources.
