Modified semi-chemical pulping process for improved high-yield packaging materials from softwood

This project aims to address the economic and environmental challenges facing Sweden's forest industry by developing an innovative, high-yield, pulping process for producing pulp raw material for bio-based packaging.
The project applies Neutral Sulfite Semi-Chemical (NSSC) process to softwood via an Alkaline Neutral Sulfite Semi-Chemical (A/NSSC) approach.
The project utilizes softwood as raw material and aims to produce pulp for the production of bio-based, sustainable packaging materials with more efficient use of the biomass from forestry. Key activities include pilot scale trials at Valmet and at Stora Enso. This initiative aligns with FORMAS’ strategic objectives and presents a potential shift from traditional kraft processes to more sustainable, bio-based pulp production methods.
