Lignosize - a lignin-based hydrophobing agent

The project aims to further develop a hydrophobizing agent based on kraft lignin – a byproduct from pulp production – to improve the properties of liner in humid environment rendering the liner water- and dirtrepellent. The work includes process development at laboratory scale and upscaling to demonstration scale, ultimately enabling future industrial production of the modified lignin derivative, Lignosize.
The hydrophobizing agent will be evaluated in full-scale trials on one of Europe’s most modern paper machines at the SCA Obbola paper mill. The goal is to verify functionality and performance under real production conditions, while contributing to a more sustainable and circular use of residual streams from the forest industry.
Through collaboration between the chemical industry and the pulp and paper industry, the project creates conditions for innovation, resource efficiency, and new material solutions for the liner of the future.
Critical parts of the process for Lignosize production will be futher developed and the results will be implemented in a demonstration facility. After this work is completed the demonstration facility is modified/upgraded and the project group will produce sufficient quantities for full-scale evaluation of the hydrophobizing agent’s properties in liner manufacturing.
