LignaFilm – Sustainable Coating Films from Tailored Organosolv Lignin through Controlled Esterification

This project aims to transform high-quality organosolv lignin into sustainable coating materials through controlled chemical modification.

By using structurally preserved lignin with higher reactivity, the project focuses on tuning key properties such as hydrophobicity, solubility, and processability.

The developed approach focuses on tailoring the lignin structure to improve material performance and stability. The resulting materials will be processed into thin coating films and evaluated in terms of barrier properties, surface behavior, and mechanical performance.

By establishing links between molecular structure and material functionality, the project will generate knowledge that supports the development of next-generation lignin-based coatings. The overall aim is to move lignin use beyond low-value energy applications and toward high-value, bio-based materials that can contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy.
