From Forest to Function: Circular Cellulose Materials for Moisture and Fluid Management
The project develops and validates bio-based cellulose materials for fluid management, addressing both moisture and liquid absorption in packaging and hygiene applications. Current solutions rely on fossil-based, non-recyclable materials such as silica gel, calcium chloride, and superabsorbent polymers, generating significant waste and limiting circularity. The hypothesis is that engineered cellulose materials can approach the performance of conventional solutions while enabling recyclability in paper and cardboard streams.

The project builds on Adsorbi’s cellulose-based granulation platform, where nanocellulose, fibres, and additives are structured to control absorption and adsorption properties. Two material families are developed: one for moisture control and one for liquid absorption (e. g. body fluids). Development is iterative and benchmark-driven, combining prototyping and testing with Chalmers University of Technology.
Work includes benchmarking, test development, prototyping, and optimization based on performance and circularity criteria. Validation covers technical performance, safety, stability, and recyclability. Expected results include validated proof-of-concept materials, demonstrated performance versus conventional solutions, increased knowledge of cellulose-based fluid systems, and clear potential for industrial scaling and integration into circular value chains.
